Coaches: -->FLL(R) Global Innovation Award – 2 Winners!In a surprise decision, the FLL Global Innovation Award judges named two teams as first place winners for their food safety inventions during an awards ceremony at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on June 19th. The winners were each awarded up to $250,000 in services and support from the award's Go-To-Market Sponsor, Edison Nation, to help bring their ideas to market. Both teams will also be featured on the Emmy award-winning PBS television show Everyday Edisons. Two runner-up teams were awarded $5,000 grants from the X PRIZE Foundation, Founding Sponsor of the award, to help further develop their ideas. - First Place Winner: Moderately Confused of Dublin, Ohio, invented the Erasable Barcode to prevent the sale of meat stored at improper temperatures at grocery stores; - First Place Winner: S.I.S. Robotic Revolution of Shelton, Conn., invented the Smart Sticker to indicate whether or not food has been stored at the appropriate temperature; - Runner-Up: MATobot of New York, NY, invented the Smart Milk Pitcher that detects milk spoilage by measuring pH change and alerts consumers; and - Runner-Up: Seven World Wonders of Yeruham, Israel, invented the FreezeStick to renew the freezing of ice in a cooler, gaining 10 extra hours of cooling. The goals of the study are to examine the impacts of FIRST’s programs by following approximately 300-400 new participants in each program (1000 team members in all) over a period of up to five years and comparing changes in key outcomes to those of a comparison group of young people who are not involved in FIRST. Key outcomes for the study include interest in STEM and STEM-related careers, college-going, pursuit of STEM-related college majors and careers, and development of 21st century personal and workplace-related skills. The study will focus on a nationally representative sample of teams drawn from 10 states: California, Texas, New York, Michigan, Virginia, Minnesota, Oregon, Florida, Washington, and New Jersey. FIRST and Brandeis will be contacting teams in those states over the summer to solicit their interest in participating in the study. If contacted for the study, we hope that you will make every effort to participate in this important initiative. *THIS EMAIL IS FROM FIRST LEGO LEAGUE HEADQUARTERS. --> Have you thanked an FLL Partner lately?
Last week marked the 2012 North American FLL Operational Partner Conference. These amazing and tireless individuals that devote themselves to the FLL program converged in Manchester, NH, brimming with ideas and passion that sets FIRST LEGO League apart from other programs.
The FLL Partners are the volunteers behind the scenes. They organize the tournaments, recruit the teams, and help to develop the program with FLL headquarters. They do all this in their spare time, which often means giving up their vacation time to meet with us and long, sleepless nights. So, this season, if you run into one of these fabulous people (and if you are an FLL team, you are bound too!) please thank them. FIRST LEGO League could not exist with them!

--> To Our Amazing FIRST(R) LEGO(R) League Community As 2011 comes to a close, FLL(R) Headquarters reflects on another record-breaking season. In 2011 we saw our community celebrate successes and learn from failures. Robots ran, projects were impactful and, above all, Gracious Professionalism(TM) was abundant. There were devastating and heartbreaking personal losses of which so many of our community around the world reached out to help where we could, and also momentous and joyous occasions for which to be thankful. We want to wish the FLL community, our extended family, much happiness in 2012 and beyond. Thank you for enriching our lives and for being such an impactful presence on others. All the best, FIRST LEGO League Headquarters

Coaches:
-->Team Size Reminder - IMPORTANT
FLL strives to keep all aspects of the program fair and equitable. It is extremely important to remember that the maximum FLL team size is ten (10) student members. These ten (10) members are the only individuals that can work on the robot and the Project. These same ten (10) members are also the only individuals that can compete and present the Project at an event.
We know that it is hard to keep the team to ten (10) members when you have more than ten (10) children interested in FLL. Many coaches are faced with that tough decision while registering their team and some end up registering more than one team. FLL caps team size at ten (10) to maximize the experience for the children. Please note that teams who show up to a tournament with more than ten (10) team members will not be eligible for any awards. Information on team size is posted on the FLL website (firstlegoleague.org), contained within the Challenge rules, and noted throughout the Coaches’ Handbook.

Before attending tournaments make sure that your team is completely up-to-date on the:
* Robot Game Updates (35 in total): http://firstlegoleague.org/challenge/robotgameupdates
* Project FAQ: http://firstlegoleague.org/challenge/projectfaq
* Judging FAQ: http://firstlegoleague.org/event/judgingfaq
-->FLL Global Innovation Award – Patent Resources
If you’ve been exploring the FLL Global Innovation Award website (http://fllinnovationaward.firstlegoleague.org/), you have probably have noticed that we’ve gone live with our “Learn about Patents” page, http://fllinnovationaward.firstlegoleague.org/learn-about-patents.
We encourage all teams who are interested in submitting their idea to the website in January to review these materials to gain a better understanding of what patents are and how ideas are protected. We’ve even created an FLL-specific guide to help teams through the process called “FLL Guide to Applying for a Patent” (located on page).
